They're the crew of the spaceship Daedalus, which an economically destitute Earth has dispatched on a mission to re-establish contact with its far-flung, long-lost space colonies. Alex Alexander, ship's biologist, must help solve the mysteries of human and alien ecosystems that he encounters light-years from home. The planet Floria initially appears to be one of the few Earth colonies that's actually prospered since its initial settlement. But underneath the surface of the society, the "Planners" keep a strict, repressive rule over the Florians, while the police are apparently attempting to assert their own authority. But is either group actually what they seem? Critical Threshold (Daedalus Mission, #2)Critical Threshold (Daedalus Mission, #2) They call them the “rat-catchers.” They’re the crew of the spaceship Daedalus, which an economically destitute Earth has dispatched on a mission to re-establish contact with its far-flung, long-lost colonies in space. Alex Alexander, the ship’s biologist, together with his staff, must help solve the mysteries of human and alien ecosystems that he encounters light-years from home. Dendra is a stable world, covered by a huge, unchanging forest—except that nothing living can really be free of change. The planet has no seasons, but its animal life still undergoes life-cycles involving birth, maturation, metamorphosis, and death. The Earth colony sent to tame the world has failed, at least in the terms expected of it, and seems beyond redemption; but the crew of the Daedalus still has to find out exactly why and how the program has gone wrong. Provided, of course, that they can survive the investigation itself! Wildeblood's Empire (Daedalus Mission, #3)Wildeblood's Empire (Daedalus Mission, #3) The colony was successful. That was evident as soon as the recontact ship Daedalus had landed. It was successful, prosperous, and everything was due to the work and genius of J. Wildeblood, biochemist and planetary leader. This world now bore the name of its benefactor. And it was truly his empire, with a grateful, hard-working people heeding every wish of his descendants. But the suspicious scientific minds of the Daedalus's special crew were very uneasy. Was Wildeblood's Empire all it seemed - or was there a structure invisible to the eyewhich spelled out something a lot more blood-curdling? The City of the Sun (Daedalus Mission, #4)The City of the Sun (Daedalus Mission, #4) The fourth landing of the Daedalus Mission confronts Alex and his companions with a colonial culture seemingly modeled on a classic Utopian dream, but all of its inhabitants are infected with a mysterious alien parasite, and they no longer seem entirely human. Are they being controlled by the parasite, or has the parasite merely enabled them to transform themselves? Can the visitors from Earth avoid infection themselves, and what will the consequences be if they cannot? For once, the risks of the contact seem potentially far greater than any possible reward--but that still leaves the visitors with the necessity of passing judgment and deciding what to do, in an exceedingly awkward situation. Balance of Power (Daedalus Mission, #5)Balance of Power (Daedalus Mission, #5) The planet Attica has two continents: Lambda and Delta. The indigenous alien population being restricted to Delta, Earth's colony was planted on Lambda. Before the arrival of the Daedalus, two sailing ships had set out from Lambda to cross the ocean separating the two continents, and neither had returned. Now a third is on its way, and Mariel Valory and Alex Alexander of the Daedalus have hitched a lift, in order that Mariel might use her talent to try to make contact with the aliens. Unfortunately, it turns out that contact has already been made, and that the aliens are building an empire with the aid of borrowed Terran technology--an empire that's beginning to crack under its internal strains and eternal challenges. And when Alex and Mariel are marooned by their reluctant hosts, things start to go from very bad to much worse... The Paradox of the Sets (Daedalus Mission, #6)The Paradox of the Sets (Daedalus Mission, #6) On the planet Geb, the crew of the Daedalus gets involved in a planetary mystery: the indigenous people, while clever and able to follow complex instructions, have no native culture and do not act intelligently of their own volition. Rome, China, and the Barbarians by Randolph B. Ford (.PDF)
📮 Rome, China, and the Barbarians by Randolph B. Ford (.PDF) This book addresses a largely untouched historical problem: the fourth to fifth centuries AD witnessed remarkably similar patterns of foreign invasion, conquest, and political fragmentation in Rome and China. Yet while the Western Roman Empire was never reestablished, China was reunified at the end of the sixth century. Following a comparative discussion of earlier historiographical and ethnographic traditions in the classical Greco-Roman and Chinese worlds, the book turns to the late antique/early medieval period, when the Western Roman Empire 'fell' and China was reconstituted as a united empire after centuries of foreign conquest and political division. Analyzing the discourse of ethnic identity in the historical texts of this later period, with original translations by the author, the book explores the extent to which notions of Self and Other, of 'barbarian' and 'civilized', help us understand both the transformation of the Roman world as well as the restoration of a unified imperial China. ♻️ Book's Info: Author Randolph B. Scandal On Plum Island by Marian E. Lindberg (.ePUB)
📮 Scandal On Plum Island by Marian E. Lindberg (.ePUB) The captain wore a see-through dress. No dispute about that. Even the captain admitted that in a certain light, guests at the party could see the outline of his body through the muslin shift. Months later, a lawyer would press for details: Was the dress tied at the waist? What color and length were the captain's socks? Did others treat him "as if you were a woman"?(From Chapter One, "Cross-Dressing For Halloween") The carefree parties on Plum Island drew the ire of Maj. Benjamin Koehler, yet he would be the man arrested and accused of "immoral conduct" at the end of 1913. Koehler, a West Point alumnus and Philippine War veteran, had been tasked with bringing discipline to the 700 men living at Fort Terry, a sprawling post on a beautiful island off New York's coast. He lived on officers row with his sister, an educated and independent woman who, like her brother, was unmarried. Little did the devoted siblings know that Fort Terry would soon be the stuff of front-page headlines, with Ben Koehler at the center of them—and not for his dutiful service to his country. ♻️ Book's Info: Author Marian E. Tramps and Trade Union Travelers by Kim Moody (.ePUB)
📮 Tramps and Trade Union Travelers by Kim Moody (.ePUB) Why has there been no viable, independent labor party in the United States? Many people assert “American exceptionalist” arguments, which state a lack of class-consciousness and union tradition among American workers is to blame. While the racial, ethnic, and gender divisions within the American working class have created organizational challenges for the working class, Moody uses archival research to argue that despite their divisions, workers of all ethnic and racial groups in the Gilded Age often displayed high levels of class consciousness and political radicalism. In place of “American exceptionalism,” Moody contends that high levels of internal migration during the late 1800’s created instability in the union and political organizations of workers. Because of the tumultuous conditions brought on by the uneven industrialization of early American capitalism, millions of workers became migrants, moving from state to state and city to city. The organizational weakness that resulted undermined efforts by American workers to build independent labor-based parties in the 1880s and 1890s. Using detailed research and primary sources; Moody traces how it was that ‘pure-and-simple’ unionism would triumph by the end of the century despite the existence of a significant socialist minority in organized labor at that time. ♻️ Book's Info: Author Kim Moody Size 2.6MB Category Non-Fiction > History File Type ePUB 📥 Download Links: https://uploda.sh/9705Xc2lkO9g https://devuploads.com/07i2ns5i8sn0

Human Shields by Neve Gordon, Nicola Perugini (.ePUB)
📮 Human Shields by Neve Gordon, Nicola Perugini (.ePUB) From Syrian civilians locked in iron cages to veterans joining peaceful indigenous water protectors at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, from Sri Lanka to Iraq and from Yemen to the United States, human beings have been used as shields for protection, coercion, or deterrence. Over the past decade, human shields have also appeared with increasing frequency in antinuclear struggles, civil and environmental protests, and even computer games. The phenomenon, however, is by no means a new one. Describing the use of human shields in key historical and contemporary moments across the globe, Neve Gordon and Nicola Perugini demonstrate how the increasing weaponization of human beings has made the position of civilians trapped in theaters of violence more precarious and their lives more expendable. They show how the law facilitates the use of lethal violence against vulnerable people while portraying it as humane, but they also reveal how people can and do use their own vulnerability to resist violence and denounce forms of dehumanization. Ultimately, Human Shields unsettles our common ethical assumptions about violence and the law and urges us to imagine entirely new forms of humane politics ♻️ Book's Info: Author Neve Gordon, Nicola Perugini Size 17.9MB Category Non-Fiction > History File Type ePUB 📥 Download Links: https://uploda.sh/sO5vrcp4TOAI https://devuploads.com/jmel408v34jo

Rational Fog by M. Susan Lindee (.PDF)
📮 Rational Fog by M. Susan Lindee (.PDF) A thought-provoking examination of the intersections of knowledge and violence, and the quandaries and costs of modern, technoscientific warfare. Science and violence converge in modern warfare. While the finest minds of the twentieth century have improved human life, they have also produced human injury. They engineered radar, developed electronic computers, and helped mass produce penicillin all in the context of military mobilization. Scientists also developed chemical weapons, atomic bombs, and psychological warfare strategies. Rational Fog explores the quandary of scientific and technological productivity in an era of perpetual war. Science is, at its foundation, an international endeavor oriented toward advancing human welfare. At the same time, it has been nationalistic and militaristic in times of crisis and conflict. As our weapons have become more powerful, scientists have struggled to reconcile these tensions, engaging in heated debates over the problems inherent in exploiting science for military purposes. M. Susan Lindee examines this interplay between science and state violence and takes stock of researchers’ efforts to respond. Many scientists who wanted to distance their work from killing have found it difficult and have succumbed to the exigencies of war. Indeed, Lindee notes that scientists who otherwise oppose violence have sometimes been swept up in the spirit of militarism when war breaks out. ♻️ Book's Info: Author M. 19 Pride and Prejudice Variations by Florence Gold (.ePUB)(.MOBI)
📮 19 Pride and Prejudice Variations by Florence Gold (.ePUB)(.MOBI) Florence Gold’s existence is owed to Jane Austen’s timeless and invaluable legacy, which she bestowed upon the world two hundred years ago. I was raised on Austen’s books. 'Persuasion' and 'Pride and Prejudice' were constants on my grandmother’s bedside table. Although I read them from a young age, it wasn’t until I truly immersed myself in Austen’s literature that I understood why Granny Veronica liked the old lady and her 19th century literature so much. Strangely enough, more than a century after Austen’s passing, Granny found herself facing similar social issues to those of her favourite author—not being free to choose her own future or who to love, to fulfil her wish to study or have a profession. She was obliged to be a housewife like so many ladies at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the reasons I started my journey in Austenesque literature was to pay tribute to Granny Veronica and all the women whose dreams forever went unfulfilled. I have always written, yet for so long, I did not have the chance to write every day, to be a just a writer and live only for my books. This finally happened when I reached the age of a granny myself, although it was only possible because I had the chance to write in the digital age and because I am an IT specialist who contributed, during a twenty-five-year-long career, to the implementation of digital technology in education and culture. ♻️ Book's Info: Author Florence Gold Size 2.1MB Category Fiction > Romance Regency File Type ePUB 1. 📮 Mischievous Creatures by Catherine McNeur (.ePUB) The untold story of two sisters whose discoveries sped the growth of American science in the nineteenth century, combining "meticulous research and sensitive storytelling" (Janice P. Nimura, New York Times-bestselling author of The Doctors Blackwell) In Mischievous Creatures, historian Catherine McNeur uncovers the lives and work of Margaretta Hare Morris and Elizabeth Carrington Morris, sisters and scientists in early America. Margaretta, an entomologist, was famous among her peers and the public for her research on seventeen-year cicadas and other troublesome insects. Elizabeth, a botanist, was a prolific illustrator and a trusted supplier of specimens to the country’s leading experts. Together, their discoveries helped fuel the growth and professionalization of science in antebellum America. But these very developments confined women in science to underpaid and underappreciated roles for generations to follow, erasing the Morris sisters’ contributions along the way. 📮 The Silk Finisher by Daniel Melchior (.ePUB) What happens when toxicity invades a life at every turn? A 1963 murder leads to a decade-long journey for a son to uncover truths about his family, an American town, and ultimately himself. In the “Crossroads of America,” three active-duty US Army paratroopers commit a more heinous crime than the one they are trying to cover up. Their arrests and trial shock and divide residents of the town between those who see the soldiers as heroes and those who view them as cold-blooded killers. Author Dan Melchior unearths the story of Rudolph Ziemer, known by some as the “Queer Undertaker.” Along the way, he uncovers forgotten often toxic stories involving the Cold War and the Jim Crow south, infidelity, addiction, bigotry, murders, and accidents all woven into the fabric of one woman's life as a laboring silk finisher—the most skilled presser of clothes, the one who removes the deepest wrinkles from the most delicate weaves. The stories link the Civil Rights era to World War II to the march of the MAGA movement and parallel the divisions and challenges facing America today.
