2. A Lick of Flame

2. A Lick of Flame - Find the lost kings. Break the curse. Save the realm. Which is all well and good, but not for someone like me. I’m timid and small. I’ve always been good at growing things, looking after animals and children, that kind of thing. Fighting is not for me. I run, and I hide. Bottom line, I know my limits. I lost everything when the plague hit, and Snow took over as our evil queen. Thankfully I found a home at the village orphanage, where I have remained for ten years. First as an orphan and later as a teacher. I’m content with my life. I enjoy looking after the children and tending to the gardens. Things are simple, which suits me just fine. Until one day, while fleeing from the dreaded fae, I find a large egg in the Forgotten Caves. One thing is for certain, it’s no ordinary egg. It’s large and covered in scales. I instantly know it’s a dragon’s egg. There’s no doubt in my mind because the caves where I found the egg used to house the magnificent beasts. I can’t help but touch its warm, scaly surface. Imagine my surprise when a crack forms in the dragon’s egg, and from the crack, there is a lick of flame. What happens next will change my whole life…

3. A Shard of Ice

3. A Shard of Ice - One snowflake changed everything. Now, I can’t trust anyone or anything ever again, least of all myself. I thought I was a great judge of character, turns out I’m not. Not even close! I watch in awe as the delicate ice crystal dances through the air before landing on his face, where it melts in an instant. Snow in the desert. Who could have conceived such a thing? Before the shimmering drop can even run down his jaw, he changes before my eyes, and everything I knew to be true changes with him. Taylor became my best friend when I was captured three long years ago. Now, I find out that he isn’t my friend at all but rather my sworn enemy. A fae! He claims he didn’t know. That he was just as much in the dark as I was. That a spell had been cast over him to make him forget who he was. I don’t believe him. I don’t think I’ll trust anything he has to say again. We escape the salt mines and if we are to stay out of the clutches of our captors, we will need to work together as a team. Me, work with a fae? Laughable. And yet, here we are. As soon as I am able, I will leave. I never want to see him again. I hate him! Loathe might be too tame a word. I am also suddenly drawn to him in a way that is just plain wrong. I’m attracted to my once-best friend, now very much my enemy. As hard as I try, I can’t resist the twisted pull. I would leave right now if I could, but I can’t. My very life depends on it.
