4. The Durand File

4. The Durand File - With all the time he’s spending on the island running his cold case unit, Andrew Cheatham is considering buying a house there. Bessie is happy to go along on the hunt with him, but they’re both surprised and upset to discover a fire raging at one of the houses he’s considering purchasing. It’s even more upsetting to learn that the fire was started deliberately. Meanwhile, the cold case unit has not one, but two murders to consider. The two men died two years apart, but the French police are convinced that the cases are connected. While Bessie is happy to agree that the cases are connected, she’s not convinced that the same person was responsible for both deaths. Can Bessie and the cold case unit work out what really happened to the two men? Bessie also wants to help the police discover who set the fire at Christian Christian’s house, but does she have time to do that, as well? And will she ever have a chance to really get to know the two police inspectors she’s working with on the unit who never seem to have time to socialise with Bessie and her friends?

5. The Evans File

5. The Evans File - Bessie Cubbon is surprised and disappointed when she learns that Andrew Cheatham isn’t going to be staying in the holiday cottage next to her home on Laxey Beach when he visits the island in February. For the next week of cold case unit meetings, he’s decided to stay in a hotel in Ramsey. It isn’t until the first meeting that Bessie learns the reason why. Police Inspector Nathan Fuller has come to the island with Andrew, to work with the unit on one of his cold cases that has always troubled him. It’s bad enough that he’s keeping Andrew away from Bessie. He’s also rude and bad-tempered. Before Bessie can dig too deeply into Nathan’s case, though, she’s promised to help Elizabeth Quayle advertise her party planning business at a wedding showcase event in Douglas. Elizabeth’s former boyfriend, Andy Caine, is there with his fiancée, Jennifer Johnson. Tensions are high, and things go from bad to worse when Jennifer suddenly disappears right after the showcase. Can Bessie help locate the missing woman? Can she convince Andy that Jennifer is wrong for him? And can she find time to help the cold case unit work out what really happened to Owen Evans, ten years after his murder?

6. The Flowers File

6. The Flowers File - Elizabeth Cubbon, Bessie to everyone who knows her, is surprised when Charles Morris invites her to lunch. He’s part of the cold case unit with which she’s been working for months, but he’s never seemed particularly friendly. Lunch is pleasant enough, but both Bessie and Charles are unpleasantly surprised when they walk out of the restaurant to find that Charles’s hire car has been stolen. Meanwhile, the cold case unit is considering a case that may not be a case at all. Julia Tyler is convinced that her boyfriend, Jack Flowers, is missing. His family, friends, and former fiancée all disagree, although none of them will provide Julia or the police with any information to help them find Jack. When Charles has a second hire car stolen from him later in the same week, Bessie can’t help but get involved. Can Bessie help discover who is stealing hire cars? Can she and the cold case unit find Jack Flowers? Is he just missing or has something terrible happened to him?

7. The Goodman File

7. The Goodman File - Elizabeth Cubbon, called Bessie by nearly everyone, has many friends on the Isle of Man. She’s called the island home for more years than she wants to remember. When one of her friends, Mary Quayle, asks for a favour, Bessie is quick to agree. Mary is hoping that Bessie can track down Walter Bolton, a man who was once friends with her husband, George. While doing her best to find Walter, Bessie is also busy with the cold case unit’s next investigation. Eleven years ago, Lance Goodman was stabbed to death while wearing a Santa suit and sitting inside Santa’s sleigh in a department store in a small town in the US. As the unit begins to go through the case file, they quickly discover that a lot of things were missed during the initial investigation. Can Bessie and the cold case unit discover who killed Lance Goodman? Can Bessie’s network of friends across the island track down Walter Bolton? Can the Seaview’s new pastry chef come up with more than a half-dozen different types of fairy cakes?

8. The Howard File

8. The Howard File - Police Inspector Andrew Cheatham is back on the island with another murder investigation for the cold case unit. On paper, it seems as if the case should have been solved decades earlier. Craig Howard was stabbed to death in a small pub, leaving behind only four possible suspects in the case. Elizabeth Cubbon, Bessie to her friends, finds the new case frustrating. As if that weren't enough to worry about, her friend Maggie Shimmin is convinced that someone is trying to kill her. Maggie knows exactly who is behind what she insists are attmpts on her life, but Bessie isn’t anywhere near as certain. Can Bessie and the cold case unit find Craig’s killer? Can Bessie convince Maggie to go to the police with her suspicions? And, after eight months of working together, can Bessie and her friends actually start to get to know Charles and Harry, the other two members of the unit?

9. The Irving File

9. The Irving File - It’s time for Bessie and her friends to consider another cold case. This time, one of Andrew’s work colleagues has come over to the island to observe the cold case unit at work. He’s going to be starting his own unit soon, and he wants to learn all that he can about what makes the unit on the island so successful. As it’s the beginning of tourist season on the island, Bessie has trouble helping Andrew’s friend find a place to stay. Eventually he ends up in a small hotel in Lonan, one that is owned by one of Bessie’s friends. But there’s a stranger staying at the hotel, a man who claims to be a long-lost relative of the owner. Bessie can’t help but suspect a con. Can the cold case unit solve another case and keep their perfect record intact? Can Bessie investigate her friend’s “nephew” without upsetting that friend? And does Andy Caine really want to buy a mansion with twelve bedrooms when he’s going to be living alone?

10. The Jordan File

10. The Jordan File - July brings sunshine and warm weather to the Isle of Man. It also brings Aunt Bessie and her friends another cold case to solve. This time, though, the police may know exactly what happened. It appears that Leo Jordan killed his wife and then himself, but the detective in charge of the case isn’t convinced. While Bessie and the rest of the unit are trying to work out whether the murder-suicide case was actually two murders, Jasper Coventry has problems of his own at the Seaview Hotel. When one former guest reports having his credit card information stolen while he’d been staying at the Seaview, Jasper is concerned. Days later, the complaints continue to pour in and Jasper is panicking. This sort of thing could seriously damage the luxury hotel’s reputation, and he turns to Bessie for help. Can the cold case unit work out exactly what happened to Leo and Anna Jordan? Can they help Jasper discover which member of his staff has been stealing credit card information from guests? And can Bessie be polite to Dan Ross when it’s absolutely necessary?

11. The Keller File

11. The Keller File - Andrew is back on the island for the next cold case unit meeting, and this time he’s brought his son Matthew along. When Andrew shows Bessie the stack of listings he’s been sent by his island-based estate agent, Bessie is shocked to see that one of her friends has put her house on the market. A quick call reveals that the friend’s telephone is out of service, which is worrying. While Bessie does what she can to find her friend, the cold case unit has a missing person case of its own to consider. A young woman and her two-year-old daughter vanished ten years earlier. The question is, did they leave voluntarily or did something awful happen to them? With two missing person cases to solve, Bessie is busier than ever in this eleventh book in the series.

12. The Lawrence File

12. The Lawrence File - When the cold case unit meets this time, Andrew isn’t the least bit optimistic about their chances to solve the case he’s chosen for the month. Three people died at a party in London five years earlier and no one knows for certain whom the killer was even targeting. The case has been bothering Andrew since he first read about, though, so he has finally decided to let the unit have a look at it. It isn’t long before Bessie is feeling slightly overwhelmed by the stacks of witness statements from the many partygoers. On top of that, an old friend rings because she’s concerned that her brother might be missing. Bessie had to juggle a discreet search for the missing man while reading through over a hundred witness statements, hoping to find something that everyone else has missed. It’s the cold case unit’s toughest case yet, but Bessie and her friends are determined to find the solution.

13. The Moss File

13. The Moss File - When Andrew comes back for another cold case meeting, he’s cautiously optimistic about their chances of solving the case he’s chosen. Douglas Moss was murdered and there are only four possible suspects. The problem is none of the suspects seem to have had a motive for killing Douglas. As Bessie and her friends dig into the cold case, Bessie has something else on her mind. After living in her cottage for more years than she wants to admit, Bessie has just started to wonder how it got its name. Treoghe Bwaane means Widow’s Cottage in Manx, but who was the widow? The cold case unit has to sift through twelve years of follow-up interviews, looking for missed hints as to what really happened in the Allegheny National Forest on the night that Douglas Moss died. Meanwhile, Bessie is spending her spare time in the Manx Museum archives, going through records that are considerably older. When she discovers that a man’s body was found on Laxey Beach some twenty years before she bought her cottage, her suspicions immediately turn to murder.

14. The Newton File

14. The Newton File - This month the cold case unit has a special guest. Jeremy Harrison is a reporter for a London newspaper, and he’s been given special permission to sit in on the cold case unit meetings. He can’t be given access to the actual police reports on the case, but this case got a lot of coverage in the newspapers back when it happened. One paper has been doing an annual update on the case, as well, which means Jeremy will have nearly as much information as the actual members of the unit. That’s partly due to the fact that the police files don’t give the unit a lot of information from which to work. Brent Newton got into his car one morning and drove away, presumably heading for his office. He never arrived and was never seen again. Meanwhile, Jasper Coventry, the manager at the Seaview, is worried about another missing person. Adam Meyer checked in but hasn’t been staying in his room. Adam’s friends aren’t concerned, but Jasper finds the entire situation worrying. Bessie and her friends are going to have to work twice as hard to find two missing people. But as the investigation continues, it seems increasingly unlikely that they are going to get two happy endings.

15. The Olson File

15. The Olson File - Andrew is back on the island, and he’s brought another reporter with him. Rusty Stewart is not only an investigative journalist, he’s also a witness to the murder that the cold case unit is considering for the month. While it’s helpful to have someone who was actually there to discuss the case with, it’s impossible to be certain if Rusty is telling the truth. He’s not just a witness. He’s also a suspect. While the unit tries to work out who murdered Trevor Olson, Bessie has other concerns. Andrew’s health seems to be failing, which might just put the future of the cold case unit in jeopardy. Also, Pat, the young man who manages the holiday cottages along the beach next to Bessie’s cottage, wants a favour. He and his sister, Peggy, are hoping to find their older sister, Mary. Bessie wants to find a killer and a missing person while keeping the stress on Andrew to a minimum. She’s going to have to work harder than ever to find the solutions in this fifteenth book of the series.
