Avery never pictured herself married but it appears it might be happening … no matter how she tries to dodge and weave. The Santas make an enticing distraction, so Avery throws herself in with gusto. Tracking the Santas isn’t easy because Macomb County Sheriff Jake Farrell doesn’t want the names released. He lets one slip, though, and that leads Avery on an adventure … all the way down to a halfway house in Detroit. It’s a big world and some crimes are worse than others. The only common thread Avery can find when chasing this story is a drug ring, and when she pulls that particular thread, everything comes toppling down. The drug world is dark and seamy and Avery is going to need her guile and wits to survive this one. Even if she comes out on the other side – and that’s a big if – then there’s a proposal waiting. It’s finally time for Avery Shaw to grow up … at least a little bit. Come along for the ride, because the big moment is finally here. There might even be a murder to solve along the way.

She’s a strong, capable woman, and if she has to take down a serial killer, she’s going to do it … as long as she’s not taken down first. Her team is large and in charge and it’s going to take all of them working together. Even then, they may not be strong enough to stem the tide of death washing over Macomb County. It’s time. Avery is ready for war.

24. Banner Headlines & Late Deadlines - Avery Shaw is on the hunt for action and adventure. The last place she thinks she’s going to find it is at a motivational retreat in northern Macomb County. I mean…how strong can someone be if they’re only eating tree bark, right? When one of the guests turns up dead, however, Avery gets assigned the story. She’s barely interested…until she realizes the camp is designed like a certain village from one of her favorite movies. Huts dispersed through various trees, with a huge platform and an open fireplace? Sounds like heaven…in a suburb far, far away. Avery might not believe in manifestation, but she can’t stay away from the village, and as she digs deeper into the murder, she finds an interesting set of circumstances. It seems the dead woman was sleeping with a married man. More importantly, it appears several of the women at the retreat were sleeping with the same man. Avery isn’t a joiner, but she only has one shot at figuring out who killed her victim. She’s going to have to join the retreat, where she will be expected to talk about her feelings—shudder—and eat something that isn’t cooked in grease and served with a side of chili. It’s the clean life for Avery…and by the end, she might just be wishing for murder over manifestation. She also just might get her wish.
